Embedded EthiCS @ Harvard is delighted to announce that Matt Kopec has joined the team both as Program Director of Embedded EthiCS and as Lecturer in Philosophy. Matt comes to us from Northeastern University, where he was Associate Director of the Ethics Institute. He received his doctorate in philosophy from University of Wisconsin – Madison, supervised by Elliott Sober. After receiving his doctorate, he spent time at a number of other leading philosophy programs, including University of Colorado – Boulder, Northwestern University, and the Australian National University. He has published work across a range of areas including epistemology, ethics, philosophy of science, social philosophy, and tech ethics pedagogy, with articles in Philosophy of Science, Journal of Ethics & Social Philosophy, Synthese, Ergo, and Journal of the American Philosophical Association (in addition to a number of cross-disciplinary journals). Of late, he has been focusing his research on issues related to computing technologies, including online content moderation, algorithmic prediction, and tech regulation.
In his role as Program Director, Matt will be working closely with faculty advisors in both Philosophy and CS and will take over a host of leadership responsibilities in Embedded EthiCS. He’ll also teach one class per year in Philosophy, with a special focus on the philosophical issues raised by computing technologies.
Matt started in his new role on Monday, July 24.
